A 'blonde' aged moment!!

Oh dear me, I am afraid I suffered from one of my most 'blonde' and 'aged' moments this week.

When reading the recipe for low check cranberry and orange muffins I miss-read the recipe. The recipe stated 50g of granulated sugar, I read this for 50g of granulated sweetener. I had half a jar of granulated sweetener and started to add this to the ingrediants in the mixing bowl but used the whole amount and still needed another 15g of sweetener. The mixing bowl was completely full up by this time and I was wondering what these muffins would be like with so much sweetener. I took that moment to re-read the recipe and realised that it said sugar not sweetener!! Oh dear me, I had ruined the mixture I had prepared adding all that sweetener, and used all the sweetener I had in the house.

A quick trip to the supermarket and I started my baking all over again. This time I added the 50g of granulated sugar (not much in quantity given the densisty of real sugar compared to sweetener) and 1 level tablespooon of sweetener. The muffins were fantastic and a novel twist on Christmas flavours.

What have I learnt from this experience? I am getting old and befuddled now I have turned 50!

Nearly recovered!

I have not been perfect this week, but I have been better than I feared at the beginning of the week. I always come back from France feeling low and wishing I could still be there. The low feelings make me reach for chocolate and crisps. I have succumbed to chocolate on 2 occasions this week but have managed to climb back on the Scottish Slimmers Personal Eating Plan (PEP) again.

To help counteract too many checks early in the week I have been making loads of use of the no-check/low-check recipes with huge success.

Hubby and younger daughter love the no-check soups I make and the younger daughter always takes a portion home with her for a lunch the next day! The curried butternut squash goes down well, but the favourite new one this week was the red onion and tomato soup. See my favourite recipe blog.

As ever, weight comes off slower than it goes on, but I am still able to post a weight loss of 5 lbs this week. Next week I will be back on the really losing trail instead of the yo-yo dieting.

As ever, a busy week with hubby at an interview tomorrow near Hull and up to Scotland on Tuesday night for the rest of the week! I do find being away from home has been easier to cope with than I thought and I have less access to tempting food (chocolate and crisps for me). Because I am away concentrating on work I think about food less. Marks & Spencer's count on us range is my saviour when I am away from home, both for lunch, snacks and my main meal - together with the microwave available at the hotel.

Look for a good weight loss next week.

Set Back

I coped really well with the going on holiday and the potential nightmare of the help yourself dinner and breakfast buffets on the P&O boat from Hull to Zebrugge, and thought I was coping well with my strategy in France.

My strategy was to use every day bonus food for breakfast (0% fat yogurt and fruit) and zero check lunches (vegetable soups) with a slice of bread. I did treat myself to a lovely pastry each day after my Scottish Slimmers PEP dinner.

We did eat out on the Thursday - at the lunch in the village square. We had a soup, boudin noir and apples, pork and chestnuts, cheese, and apple tart with wine, french bread and coffee. We also eat out on the Friday for lunch and the Saturday for dinner (in Calais as we were on our way home).

I think the Calais dinner probably did the bulk of the damage as I had a 4 course dinner which was a heavy meal: 2 pate starter, mussells in white wine, chicken in red wine (half a chicken) and fruit tart. We obviously had wine and coffee. My stomach felt so heavy afterwards I could not sleep!! Served me right!!

When I weighed myself on the Monday for my phone in the scales hovered between 6 and 7lbs gain - I took pity on myself and took the 6lb gain reading. The good thing is that I did phone my dietline and admit my gain, I did not run away from it.

I have learnt that I cannot let up at all on myself and must learn to cope with social and out of the ordinary situations. Even better planning!

After 2 days in the car travelling back from France my legs and knees were swollen and uncomfortable, so some of the weight gain is water retention but this was not helped by travelling up to Scotland the very next day for the start of my working week.

I did not cope so well at the beginning of this week - Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday were bad days for extra checks (all counted though). My downfall? Chocolate - Frys Orange cream bars, Lees Macaroon bars and plain Bounty bars! I went looking for the Lees Macaroon bar and stumbled across the Frys Orange bar (which you cannot get in England). The Lees Macaroon bar reminds me of being a little girl growing up in Scotland and was always an extra special treat - I wanted to treat myself.

I always find it hard coming back from holiday. I love our French house so much and really just want to stay there to make my life, but financial instability makes that just a dream. By Thursday (yesterday) I found I was back on track and starting to feel more positive again. This is helped by hubby having an interview lined up next week, so things may be looking up financially for a change. If hubby gets a good position then I can drop my working down and get back on track to study my holistic therapies - my next course I want to do is Indian Head Massage.

Lets hope that the pounds are dropping again by next Monday.
